Longstreet Theatre

Longstreet Theatre is one of the most famous landmarks on USC's campus. Longstreet Theatre is loacted on the corner of Sumter and Greene St. The theatre is modeled after ancient Greek architecture. The theatre has several concrete steps that lead to the six Corinthian pillars at the the building entrance. The buiding does not have a dome so it comes the rooftop comes to a point with a small window at the top.

Assignment 9

Printmaking

1.       The 4 types of printmaking:

 

a.       Relief – a piece of wood or linoleum is cut away with a sharp tool so that only the raised portion of the wood or linoleum can be seen on the paper. An example of this is with stamps. 

 

b.      Intaglio - the lowered areas are printed. A substance called the ‘ground’ covers the copper or zinc sheet. An etching tool is used to expose the metal while drawing the picture. The sheet is then dropped in acid, thick ink is rubbed into the grooves, and then a damp paper is placed on top and run through a press. An example of this is with currency (dollar bills). 

 

c.       Lithography – the greasy areas of a stone will print. The artist draws the image with a greasy crayon on a flat stone slab. Then the artist rolls ink onto the wet stone, meaning the ink will only stick to the greasy marks and then the artist can make the print. 

 

d.      Stencil – the open areas will print. A screen is pulled across a frame, then either using a hand-cut print, painted with tusche or using photosensitive emulsion an opening is created in the screen where the ink can pass through the screen and create an image on the paper or t-shirt below it. 

 

2.       Lithography relies on the general principle that water and oil reply each other.  To begin, the artist draws the image using a greasy crayon on a flat stone. The artist then rubs a thin layer of water onto the stone. Ink is then placed all over the stone so that the ink is only attracted to the greasy image. The print can then be made by placing the paper on the stone and putting it through a press. 

 

3.       The biggest difference between silk screen and etching is that with silk screen, the image is not a mirror image as it is with etching. In addition to etching you can control the tone, the texture and have much greater detail than you can with silk screen. Etching always produces prints that are in black in white, unlike silk screen where you can have various colors. 

 

 

Trinity Cathedral

1. How is the church laid out?

If you were looking down on the church, it appears to be a cross - nave, apse, and two transepts.

2. What are some of the parts of the interior?

The interior has an ambulatory, choir pit, and chapel.







 3. Discuss the ceiling height, transcepts, and interior decorations.
There are large stained glass windows all around the church. When I looked in through the window I saw that the ceiling of the church is high and has beautiful colors.

Tree of Life

Tree of Life had great colors that appealed to my sense of sight. The camera movements, and various types of shots made the film interesting to look at and it was clear that they were for a specific purpose, though I'm not sure what that is since the movie was so confusing. The story was very confusing, especially the way that the relationships were reveled between Brad Pitt's character and his family. I wish that we had more information about the family in order to understand their situation instead of the snippets that were shown. I definitely left this movie more confused than any movie I've ever seen.

Rear Window and The Truman Show

 

1. Describe some of the commonalities of the directors.

Some of the same types of shots are used in each film. The angles and movement are similar in the films. This made more sense to me when in class we talked about how Weir admired Hitchcock and wanted to emulate him.

2. Describe some of the commonalities of the films.

• Cristof is the director of the Truman Show and Jeffries can also be seen as as a director - Cristof directs all of the actors and cameras on the Truman show and Jeffries's cameras are his neighbor's windows. 
• Lisa Fremont and Meryl Burbank each do some sort of "advertising" in each film. Meryl does commercials and Lisa models for Jeffries. 
• There are fake skies in each film. In class, we talked about how this relates to Thomas Kinkade's  paintings and the view of the creator.

3. Discuss voyeurism.

-The audience watches the film

-The characters watch each other

-The camera records everything

Assignment 9

1. Describe the 4 kinds of printmaking processes

2. Describe the process of lithography

First, the artist will draw an image with a greasy crayon directly onto a flat stone slab. The small parts of the greasy crayon will stick to the texture of the stone. The artist then rolls ink on the wet stone and the ink will only stick to  the greasy marks. The print is then made.

3. How can you tell the difference between the process of an etching and a silkscreen?

During the etching process, the screen is soaked in an acidic bath. A silkscreen is created by inks of multiple colors being placed one-by-one. 

Assignment 8

Light Opera- Light opera incorporates spoken words and appeals to a wider audience.     It  is a less demanding form of operatic theater and still operatic voices and a live orchestra.

Musical Theater-  the broadway musical, music intersperse with dialogue. It can be performed by singing actors, sometime equipped with microphones.

Opera-  an elevated style of musical theater as defined by the age of Mozart from about 1775-1910.
